collaboration | behind the scenes with sierra diprose

we collaborated with the talented sierra on a project to showcase our debut collection. at the set, we asked sierra a few questions about her background and inspiration.
nikita has known sierra for last 15 years, they attended the same high school, rutherford college on the west side of auckland, new zealand. this project has brought them full circle in their respective careers as they share a common interest in performing arts. this opportunity allowed them to collaborate and express their creativity after all those years.
tell us a little bit about your background and where are you currently working?
i studied contemporary dance full time at university in nz and have gone on to dance professionally for the last 10 years. i freelance to different dance companies which i love as i get to dance and perform with lots of people. i also run the creative human project which is a platform where i get to collaborate with artists and students to create and capture movement. i also work in an epic cafe in Auckland called crave!
what does performing/ dance mean to you?
i love performing. i always have! when i’m performing its like nothing else matters but just being in the moment and the feeling of sharing something you love. i always feel that if i’m engaged in my performance then the viewers will feel it too. that's what I hope for anyway!
what made you take up performing arts?
i took it up as a teenager so a bit later than most kids but once i started i just couldn’t stop dancing. it became my life in a good way. it will always be apart of me.
is there a particular style of dance you tend to lean more towards?
i trained in multiple styles but mostly contemporary dance so that would be my main style. i would love to learn hip hop though, i will do it one day!
who are your favourite dancers/ performer?
my friends!
at what moments are you the truest version of yourself?
when i’m teaching people who are just as pumped about movement as i am and when i’m surfing or swimming in the ocean.
what is meaningful to you?
seeing people get to do what they feel passionate about. it makes the world a happier place.
what is something you have recently rediscovered?
that the ocean is the place that i feel most at home. i think often life can get pretty busy and its hard to slow down. i’ve found that the more time i spend in and around the ocean the more calm and relaxed i am and therefore the more creative can be. it’s a win win situation.
what clothes do you gravitate towards?
i’m a jeans and tshirt kinda gal but i love a great dress too. everything i wear i need to be able to do a high kick in though just incase
what did you enjoy about this project?
it was such a fun collaborative project. we shot in the most beautiful studio and the outfits were a dream to dance in too!
what tv show/ film or documentary did you recently watch?
a surf documentary ‘twelve’ by john john florence.
